The Florida Panthers continued enhancing their roster depth for the 2024-25 season by signing defenseman Jaycob Megna, a Florida native, to a one-year, two-way contract. The deal is valued at $775K at the NHL level and $450K at the minor league level. Megna, 31, started the 2023-24 season as a backup with the Seattle Kraken before making his way to the Chicago Blackhawks through a waiver claim on January 3. He made an immediate impact with the Blackhawks, registering an assist against the New York Rangers in his debut just a day later.
Born in Plantation, Florida, Megna’s return to the Sunshine State marks a significant homecoming. Standing at 6’6″ and weighing 220 lbs, he brings both size and experience to the Panthers’ defensive lineup. During his stint with the Blackhawks, Megna played in 44 games, netting two assists and accumulating 22 penalty minutes.
Originally a seventh-round pick (210th overall) by the Anaheim Ducks in the 2012 draft, Megna has carved out a substantial career in professional hockey. Over 185 NHL regular season games, he has recorded 4 goals and 23 assists. Additionally, Megna boasts significant experience in the AHL, having played 370 games at that level.
Adding a local talent like Megna not only fortifies the Panthers’ defense but also brings a sense of community pride to the team, as they welcome back one of Florida’s own to the fold.
